In Chapter 5, we learned about internet services to help edit media components online, like pictures and videos. We learned about assistive technologies such as use powerpoint to create digital projects and post them online to create a wider knowledge base. We had a guide about WWW (World Wide Web) sites like how to upload and edit pictures. We learned about search techniques such as online search browsers and how to type in key words of what we want to find out. We learned about online search tools as well as how to find certain words on a website.
Since my last posting I have not learned much since I knew most of this already and since my last post was like 30 minutes ago. Regardless of this, I guess I could say that I learned how to do different things on the web with the webhunt exercise. For instance, I had never used Google Scholar before, and it was really neat to learn about it and see what it does.
Something that applies to this class is a new facebook app I just discovered! I think it is really neat because it is mosaic and it will take any picture from your albums or photos tagged of you and then you can turn it into this mini work of art with a few clicks! I thought that was one of the cooler apps since there are so many already.

In Chapter 4, we learned that input devices are any hardware compnent that allows you to enter data, programs, commands, and user responses into a computer. An example of an input device is the keyboard which is a group of switches that allows you to enter data into a computer. We also learned that output devices are any computer component capable of conveying information to a user. An example of an output device is a monitor which displays the data from a computer onto a screen. We also learned that storage media is the physical material on which data, instructions, and information are kept. An example of a storage medium is a floppy disk. A storage device is the mechanism used to record and receive these items to and from a storage medium. An example of a storage device is a magnetic disk.
Something I would like to share with the class is that you always need to have a hard copy with you! My roommate submitted a paper online the day it was due, which was the day before class, then when she went into class the teacher asked for a hard copy and then took off points if you didn't have one, regardless of the fact if you submitted the paper online on time. I took this as a lesson to always have a hard copy with you no matter what, because it never hurts to be cautious, especially when grades are involved.
After last week's practice test, I learned a lot more about Microsoft Word and how to use it. I learned about all the different applications it has and what most of the little icons on the toolbar represent. I learned everything I needed to know for future projects and presentations, as well as for recreational use. This will benefit me in my future as a teacher because Microsoft Word is an integral part of the classroom with lesson plans, sign-up sheets, and basic handouts.

In Chapter 3 we learned about application software, which is software containing programs that do specific things for the users, such as Windows programs which are used by a number of different users. We read about the different icons and buttons in some applications, such as paint. We looked at the desktops of both a Mac and a PC to see the differences and what the commands for each are. We learned how to format things using the Windows clipboard that is used on applications and then how to save the work we had done. Another type of software we learned about was productivity software which is software, such as word processing, that is used to make people more efficient and productive in their daily activities. We learned about the different aspects of word processing software, such as Clipart, and then we learned about spreadsheet software and all the different features and how to use them properly, like how to make a chart. More productivity software that we read about was database, which is used to create actual databases to save and retrieve data, and graphics software that is used for presentations. Other types of productivity software that we learned about include PDAs and software suites and integrated softwares such as Microsoft Works and AppleWorks. The third type of software that we learned about is graphics and multimedia software which is designed for specific areas of work. Some types of graphics and multimedia software are image edititing programs, publishing programs and authoring programs for web pages and multimedia software.
Some new skills I have acquired since reading this chapter is learning about spreadsheet software because I find programs like Excel very hard to use. The hardest part is learning about a function in the program and how to input a calculation into the spreadsheet. Another neat thing is learning about the wizards that can use to make cooler presentations, and even add my chart to a word document, which I did not know I could do. This could help with my education career greatly because I can use Excel to make grading charts to see where my students are and to maybe make a presentation on grades for my department head one day. I found that section in the chapter to be very helpful.
I learned a lot about internet connections this week because my internet in my apartment refuses to work. I had to call the internet company every day and basically learned how to manually connect the internet which I had no idea how to do. It sucks but my internet still isn't working so now I have to come on campus and use computer labs or borrow my roommates' computers, which by the way the connection works in their rooms it just doesn't work in mine. I guess this could help me one day because now I know how to find my IP address and how to use my system preferences to format my connection.

In Chapter 1, we learned about the ARCS Model. The ARCS Model is a motivational teaching tool that was developed in 1983 by John M. Keller. This technique is based on a teacher's ability to grasp the Attention of the students through a lesson by either using technology or an unorthodox technique to intrigue the students; make the lesson Relevant to the student's lives in order to better motivate them; to make the lesson Challenging enough for a student that once they complete it they feel Confident in themselves; and to ultimately give students the Satisfaction of their Success. Thus you have, ARCS. The book also taught us that today's generation of students are digital students because of their ability to use multiple forms of technology for communication, their ability to multi task easily, and to be goal oriented all at the same time. We also learned about the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) which is a nonprofit group that advocates using technology as a tool to improve teaching and learning. The ISTE was important in the development of the NATSE (National Council for Accreditation for Teacher Education) which defines the concepts and fundamentals that teachers should apply to using technology in the classroom, as well as tests them in order to receive accreditation for using technology. Some standards that are expected of teachers when using technology are to demonstrate a common knowledge of computers and their computer skills, to be able to use their skills to effectively plan, teach, and asses the students and the curriculum, as well as being able to empower the diverse students to take something away from the lessons as well. We did learn about the different ways schools use computers, from taking attendance to finding substitute teachers, to keeping addresses and phone numbers up to date, and to planning lessons and keeping grades.
Some new skills I have aquired have been learning how to use Windows XP once I started working with the practice test. I do not have Windows XP, so I know this will help me. I think this will help me in my further career as a teacher because it is important to stay up to date with the changing technology so that I can help my students with it and use it to my own advantage when preparing lesson plans and using the grading capabilities provided by a computer.
Something interesting that I thought could apply to this class was an extra credit assignment I received from my music professor. She decided that since the world of online video has erupted, we can chose to create an online YouTube project. I thought that was very inventive, clever, and adventuresome. It made me think about the ARCS model because this would help us to learn something in a new and exciting way that would grasp our attention. I have never submitted a project using YouTube before and I thought that was a very unique way to incorporate technology into the classroom. Maybe one day I can do something like that in my own classroom.
